#RootsTech 2016 -- Genealogy, Genetics and the Next Generation

This is a presentation by Paul Woodbury of Legacy Trees Genealogists. They are the research partner of MyHeritage.com. See MyHeritage.com and Legacy Tree Genealogists – working together.

He asks these question

  • Why do you do genealogy?
  • How did you first get started?
  • Why do others do genealogy?
Who does genealogy?
First people United States, UK, Canada, Australia and last Europe have the greatest interest in genealogy.

Where are the genealogical professionals?
  • UK
  • Ireland
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Poland
He posits that interest in genealogy is linked to countries who have immigration or emigration. Genealogical interest comes from displacement and disconnect from cultural or historical roots. Based on current and projected immigration patterns, he posits an increase in the need for future genealogical research products.

Who does genetic genealogy?
  • Adoptions
  • Misattributed paternity
  • Unknown paternity
  • Blended families
  • Donor conception

  1. Don't know where he gets his info. Europe is a hotbed for genealogy. Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Norway are Huge. Great Britain has WDYTYA. Iceland has the whole country done back to the year 1000. By comparison, my Canada is invisible.

    1. I thought the observations were pretty ad hoc and not based on any sort of reliable data. So I agree somewhat and disagree somewhat with the conclusions that were presented.
